Problem with my ‘87 Chevy El Camino

Topic starter

This car has been sitting about a year without starting, so I decided to buy a new battery and still nothing happened. Investigated and found my way to the problem being the starter. Replaced it with a reman starter from autozone, and I put the starter back in. Still won’t start... However, the pinion gear from the starter pops out but the starter motor does NOT crank (to be clear, the previous starter did nothing when i turned the key, no sound no nothing) so that ruled out the problem being anything with the ignition switch or transmission safety switch. Is this just a bad reman unit or is it a problem with the electrical system in the car?

Most likely bad reman. I see it too often.

Check all your grounds.  Battery negative to body and engine to body grounds for tightness and corrosion.  If a part of the circuit has high resistance, you will not get proper voltage to spin the starter.  Always try to buy reman parts with a Limited Lifetime warranty.
