Can a damaged catalytic converter cause the muffler to rattle ?
I have a 1999 Honda hrv, manual, and I have a loud rattle coming from the muffler end of the exhaust. I wacked the muffler with a rubber mallet and I could hear small pieces shaking inside of it.
Is it just the muffler that's bad? or the entire exhaust starting from the catalytic converter?

Baffles have rotted away inside the muffler.
Change the muffler or live with it?
Depends how annoying it is. If the muffler is not leaking externally I'd be inclined to just turn the radio up and live with it.
