Im not sure if you will see this or not. I have a 08 chevy cobalt 2.4 litter echotech engine. Ive had it for about 2 years now and when i first start the car it makes a rattling noise almost like metal on metal im thinking it has something to do with the timing chain but im not sure the car has 184,000 miles on it. It is an automatic also i never had any issues with the car breaking down it has a lot of miles but it has been a descent car. Is it time to get rid of it?

is the oil topped up?

Good question. A low oil level would produce this, as well.

Yes i just got a oil change in it. I get the oil changed every 5,000 miles. It does burn oil but ive been told that is because of the engine and the car. So i make sure to keep oil in it

If it goes away as the car warms up, it's called "chain slap." Sometimes adjusting or replacing the timing chain tensioner could help. But frankly, with the car at 184K, it's your call.

Here's a video of how to replace, if you're a DIY type: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR6yqvByUzg

Thats a very informative video. Unfortunately i dont have the tools or away to raise the car or anything like that. I talked to some shops and they quoted me $2500-$3000 to fix or replace. So with the miles it has its not worth it

Agreed. You must be maintaining the vehicle very well, to this point. The current mileage is impressive, for a Cobalt. Kudos to you.

Thank you. I tried to take care of the car the best i could but i knew with the miles it has something bad would eventually happen

For your next oil change, add some Lucas engine oil additive (not the heavy one) to help the situation.

I will do that thank you
