Repair or get another vehicle

I currently have a 2002 f150 with 125000 miles. It needs new brake lines + rotors + pads + calipers. Shop is asking in worst case $1500.

I am going to get an SUV here in the near future anyway. (2017 or newer-ish or new)

Since the truck is only worth a couple thousand according to KBB is it worth fixing to let the market cool down a bit or should I just sell and go get the SUV now?

The used market is crazy. If the truck is in good shape I would fix it.

It does run good from engine and transmission perspective.

Things is does need in addition to brakes that I forgot is back half of exhaust as muffler completely rusted out and bed crossmembers as those rusted out too and tires are coming up to be replaced too in the near future. So I'm just guessing maybe looking $1500 brake job + $2000 in exhaust + tires + rigged up crossmember supports to be back in good shape.

IDK... Just hate having to spend money on it if it will just be worthless in a year or so when the next problem arises. Am I completely wrong with that thought?
It turned into my daily driver only because my mazda got totaled in december.

The rust on the cross members is not good. It might be good to get rid of it now.

I would fix it and drive it as long as possible. Avoid buying anything now. Prices are at an all time insane.

Assuming it is in good shape otherwise, I'd fix it and keep it.

What car/truck can you buy for $1,500? Not much these days.

If it runs & shifts okay, keep the truck

Well, if it's rusting out and having exhaust issues as well it's probably best not to sink money into it. I was going to ask about rust in my first answer but was being foolishly optimistic.

I had a 2003 F-150 that still ran good with 265k miles but it had body and frame rust, so it was retired from service because it was unsafe.

Yea, it's time for your replacement unfortunately.

thanks everyone for the input! I really hate that I am in this position as I can maybe rig up the crossmembers but knowing brakes are needed and tires soon it just makes it worse. I did get my money's worth out of the truck so that is at least the good news.
