Well there's a long story about the 2017 Malibu and the P2097 code, so it seems.
Looks like at least one ECM software update and 3 service bulletins instructing dealers what to do after the software update doesn't solve the problem.
There's references being made about owners overfilling the crankcase oil level.
So, tell him to check his oil.
