[Solved] 2013 Hyundai Elantra Shift Lock Solenoid problem: cannot shift from N to R?

Hi,

This problem has taken place three times since November. The issue with my 2013 Hyundai Elantra is that: while going to stop and park my car, the shift gear is stuck at N and cannot be moved to R, even though I have pressed the brake firmly. When it happened the first time in November, I was so panic. The only way to try was to turn my car off. Then after restarting the car, the shift movement resumed normal. Went to Hyundai dealer, was told that the shift lock solenoid should be replaced.  It was done a few days ago.  But the same problem came back after putting in a new solenoid.  Went back to the dealer today, they said the solenoid was working properly and found nothing wrong.  Any input will be much appreciated.  Thank you!

Clarification: Mileage on the vehicle?

It's 62,000 km.

Update:

The problem, i.e., gear locked at N, came back last week.  But this time it triggered the dashboard repair light on.  Code was P0705 transmission range sensor circuit malfunction. The Hyundai mechanic had it checked and recommended replacing PRND switch. The part had been ordered. Hope that the problem will be truly resolved.

Since the last fix (replacing shift lock solenoid) did not work, I told the customer service lady that I needed to pay twice for the same issue.  She said it did not pull the repair light last time so this time was counted as another thing. Do you guys think her comment is OK?

Thanks!

Intermittent problems are difficult to diagnose. The mechanism that the solenoid operates is probably worn or damaged.

Do your symptoms match these? -

Thanks for the tips. Symptoms a bit similar. Would like to further look into this issue in this direction with the dealer.

It’s a known issue with Hyundais, so don’t let the dealer tell you ‘that’s normal’. All the best & please keep us posted with the fix.

More update:

The PRND switch had been replaced. Hopefully, it will work.  Hyundai only charged me part of the cost after my request for some reduction.

Thanks guys!
