Should I buy this Hyundai?

Ok, lets try again.

I'm living on soc. sec. like many others and like many others am looking for an inexpensive car to get around in. Retired so no more driving to work, just to the gulf to fish and to the grocery store, A few times to the V.A.

I ran across a 2008 Hyundai Elantra with 116K miles and a 5 speed manual trans. I learned to drive a manual in 1968 on M 151 army jeeps and 5 ton trucks so thats no problem.

Carcomplaints.com lists this model as a good buy.

I'd like your input on this one.

Never buy a Hyundai. Ever.

Hyundais are subpar in quality and reliability. Thats just how it is. But the 07-09 Elantra is probably the most reliable more reliable one. If you get it cheap enough <$3000, then it could be a decent car. Make sure to have a mechanic check it out first though.

I would say if it was relatively low mileage for its age (say 50,000 miles or so), it might be OK to buy.  But at 116,000 miles - and granted before 2010 the Hyundai’s were a bit more reliable - it’s a gamble.  Is that the only option you found?  You are better off with a Buick Park Avenue or Lincoln Towncar if you can’t find an affordable Toyota Camry/Corolla or Honda Accord/Civic.

Don't bother wasting your money on that car. It is going to end up being a big disappointment. It is going to end up falling apart on you. For the money you can find much better.

Hundayi are pretty reliable cars especially the ones below 2010. My mom has hundayi sonata 2014 turbo limited. The car has 250000 miles on it and still work like new. Only yearly maintenance cost and that is about it.

And after 200000 I installed new spark plugs, alternator, starter, rotors on each wheel and brake pads so yeah they are good cars.

But keep in mind before buying any used cars make sure you find good reliable mechanic who knows what he is doing.

Take the car on test drive

See how was it driven

Was it maintained

Had any major problems

Was it in a wreck

And let mechanic scan it and inspect it

They say that US-made Hyundai/Kia cars are built worse than the ones made in Europe and South Korea, so I recommend you to have it checked by Scotty (😎) a good mechanic. Also, pay close attention to the transmission: manual transmissions made by Hyundai/Kia after 2010 are generally considered not as reliable as 6-speed automatic ones, but I'm not sure if that holds true for cars made before 2010.
