Should I change my CVT fluid if it's never been changed before?

I recently bought a rather high milage 2013 Subaru Legacy with just over 165k miles. It has a CVT transmission and I have no idea about its service history. Lately, the CVT has sounded a little whiney. Should I just go ahead and change the fluid? I've heard so many stories about people changing their fluid and their transmissions start slipping. I seriously don't have the money for a new transmission, but I'm scared if I don't do something it'll just break down anyways.

Any advice? Thanks!!

That's been said about servicing a traditional automatic as discussed in the Learning Centre .

CVTs are different and I'd take the Car Wizard's advice since you don't know the history, change it now: https://youtu.be/ILqTMbyeSPI?t=762
