i was driving and i noticed smoke coming from my under the hood. it was gradual but then it got worse and very visible. wasn't sure if it might cause a fire? i pulled over and shut off the engine and got the car towed. what do you think is the reason?

coolant leaks can smoke, as can oil leaking on the exhaust from valve cover leaks. Check that first

you're sure it's smoke, and not steam?

Did you try changing your own oil and possibly got oil on the exhaust manifold?
