Source of grinding noise when shifting to 3rd gear from lower or higher gear - 5 speed manual
Car is 09 Camry 2.4 w/ 5sp. manual. I'm the 2nd owner; original owner commuted to work until he sold it to me last year with 189k miles. 196k miles now. Aforementioned issue noticed after car is driven for about 5 min. Clutch pedal adjusted, still plenty of adjustment rod left with no improvement regarding 3rd gear shift noise. Unknown history of any clutch or tranny fluid replacement. No leaks found on engine or tranny.
Was told by shade-tree mechanic that 3rd gear is worn & only solution is to replace tranny. If so, does the motor have to be removed to replace the tranny & clutch assembly? Otherwise, please advise.
Thanks
Rick
Although standard transmissions are more forgiving than automatic, if the trans oil has never been changed in nearly 200K miles that is definitely a problem. Best to change it ASAP.
From your description it sounds like the 3rd gear synchronizer is worn. Does it still grind if you double-clutch while shifting to 3rd?
