Hello Scotty,
I own a 2003 Corolla with 160K miles. I recently threw away my splash shield that goes under the engine. Are they necessary or are they just there to make oil changes harder?

No, it doesn't really serve any purpose. Leave it off

It deflects road debris and protects things like the oil pan. I would leave it.
