this is my first car which i got used a year ago. when i press my brakes hard, i hear a kind of a shrill or squealing sound.

Many types of breaking pads are poorly made and Will make noise. A check to see if Pads are worn down to metal should be done. If you don't like the noise you could put higher quality pads like AKebono

is the squeelers that were put there to tell you to change the brake pads?
