Starting in Neutral

Hi Scotty,  I have a 2009 Honda Pilot 4wd.  I hear a whine for only a second when starting the engine on cold mornings usually 40 degrees and below.  I’ve noticed that the car doesn’t whine when I start it in neutral.  I’ve changed the timing belt, serpentine belt and tensioner.  Any idea what’s wrong and if it’s safe to ignore and keep starting in neutral?  Thanks !

just keep  starting in neutral until you figure out what's wrong.  but remember use your e-brake

Thanks

Probably some kind of belt or something. Where is the sound coming from? The engine? Transmission?

I can’t pinpoint where it’s coming from because it only lasts a second or less. It sounds like a belt but everything seems to rule that out. My mechanic thinks it’s the starter but I’m ready to just start replacing parts. It has 115K miles.
