engine clatters on startup

Hello Scotty,

   Love your YouTube channel.
I’ve got a 2013 Subaru Forester x with a manual transmission, 123,000 miles. I have a clatter/ ping on startup for 3 seconds then it goes quiet. You’ll hear it again if I lightly hold my foot on the gas and also between 2000 to 3000 rpm’s.  Also have a check engine P0420 cat code. I’ve tried lacquer thinner in a half tank of gas. Also tried Cataclean but to no avail. I have a Innova 5210 that gives a fair amount of info. Anything I can look at more in-depth with that.

thanks,

The noise could be your timing chain, either due to a worn tensioner or the chain itself. Typically if the timing chain is loose you'll see ignition timing jumping around in your live data.

The P0420 code could be caused by a bad O2 sensor, wiring, or exhaust leak rather than the converter itself.
