engine prone of blowing headgasket due to old design newer one are better made because toyotas helping them (30% stake)
if thats an 5 speed automatic id pass because it would be based on Jatco JR507E transmission.
if u get a manual it would last much longer just dont slap a turbo on that and wear it out

here in europe most people drive manual
no problem, ask around if theres a broad aftermarket for ur car if you want to keep it forever. im not sure whats so popular over where your at. goodluck
