Subarus are pretty good and have by far the best AWD systems. Ideally you want one with a manual transmission but the automatics and CVTs aren't horrible. The two main things that you want to avoid are turbochargers and 6 cylinder engines. As long as you get a naturally aspirated engine you should be good.

Forester and crosstrek are the best in my opinion. My mom has a 20 crosstrek and so far she loves it. The CVT transmissions have gotten better and the head gasket issues from prior models seems to be fixed now. Subaru pushes AWD and the boxer motors. In my opinion the are king of AWD. People hate on CVT and there’s good reason to. But that’s what the Japanese manufacturers are going to and good thing because they tend to fix and perfect issues as they come up with the vehicles they make. American manufacturers don’t do that at all unless they are forced to.

Subarus are decent cars until 100k miles. After that, the CVT transmissions tend to go out. However, if its a manual transmission they can last a lot longer than that.
