just purchased 2010 rav4 sport v6. Book and oil cap say 5W30. Does not say so obviously its conventional oil. Would it be better to use synthetic or it does not matter. I want it to last, it has 258,000 KM and I live in a snow belt in ontario canada, thanks.
Full synthetic is pretty much the norm nowadays on relatively new cars (2000s and up), but it's up to the owner's preference on which to use if it is not stated in the owner's manual. If it states to use full synthetic in the owner's manual, then don't downgrade to conventional. However, you can always upgrade from conventional to full synthetic. Full synthetic is way better than conventional in many ways.
full synthetic
I personally would put full synthetic in it. I have a 2014 nissan that I put full synthetic in it but on my 90' F150 I go conventional.
258,000 km is about 160,000 miles. With that high mileage I would stick with whatever type oil you have been using before. If it was much lower mileage you can go either conventional or synthetic, but once you choose an oil type you generally want to stick to that type from that point onward. Synthetic allows for longer intervals between oil changes compared to conventional so if you drive a lot every year it’s be better to use that. It also costs more, too. Scotty does good job explaining it here, but since you have such high mileage I would not change oil types.

He just bought it.
Correct, I saw that but was just trying to give him a general rule of thumb.
Full Synthetic. Not synthetic blend.
Synthetic. It is superior to conventional oil.
