Tacoma Electric Pickup

Hey Scotty,

Why haven't we seen or heard of an electric version of the Tacoma Pickup? Are there problems with protecting the battery and electronics when going through water etc...? what are the production problems? I would expect Toyota to be announcing something by now

Im sure there are many variables like if it aint broke dont fix it and Tacomas buyers are far alart from typical EV buyers at least where the technology sits today.  One possible factor might be that Toyota CEO has explicitly said that EVs are not a sustainable solution - batteries and electricity fundamentally require petroleum intensive inputs despite what comes out of the exhaust pipe.  This is evident in the fact they are leading a counter solution and hedging against this EV trend with hydrogen vehicles, they just out a new Hydrogen optio .  Hydrogen is more viable, actually cleaner and truly sustainable solution despite the need to develop hydrogens manufacturing and cost efficiency and a nationwide infrastructure to enable it.  Zerohedge.com recently had a good article about EVs environmental hypocrisy link below sheds some light about Toyotas overall philosophy and positioning.

All automakers are eventually going to have EVs in their portfolio.  Toyota is also usually slower to roll out new technology and features (after all their current lineup is still NOT dominated by turbocharged engines yet, and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay took time as well) but for good reason, one of them being they want to iron out the bugs before they mass produce.  They have a reliability track record they are trying to maintain.

In the meantime, they are working towards incorporating solid-state batteries in EVs which would be a game changer:

Thanks! same comment as above!

Buy a gasoline one keep it until EVs are cheaper than ICE vehicles.

thing is.....what is the gamble on fuel costs. Will a drop in demand for gas powered drive gas prices up or down?

Not sure about gas price in future. But electricity bills are more and more expensive
