Should transmission oil be changed at a particular interval or only when inspection shows it's needed? How often to inspect?
I waited too long on my original and want its replacement to last. I am the original owner and my mechanic said it never needed replacing. Now 5th gear is making whining noise on acceleration.
Yes you want to drain and refill with the correct fresh fluid. Your transmission will probably be a little quieter and shift a little smoother. The convention for changing it is 30,000-60,000 miles.
With that mileage and mechanic you should think about doing the differential fluids and transfer case as well.

Your mechanic is lying. 40,000 miles for transmission, transfer case and both differentials, plus lube all zerk fittings and steering knuckles.
