Hey Scotty my brother bought 2020 Toyota Raize (Daihatsu Rocky) here in the Philippines it’s a mini crossover with a manual 3 cylinder NA engine. What are your thoughts about 3 cylinders, Toyota’s rebadging models of other car manufacturers, and Daihatsu’s name and reliability in general?
2020 Toyota Raize
I mean... it's a tiny little Daihatsu...
As nice as they are, to me the Rocky never felt like a "real car" the way many others do.
The Sonic is larger and drives better, the Suzuki Fronx brings a lot to the table and others offer a really nice experience - this is where Daihatsu really does fall short...
And also there's the recent entry of the Geely Coolray into your market (costs like a well optioned 1.0T Raize) - personally I just love that car, I think it can beat a Daihatsu on every front other than long term reliability.
"Toyota’s affiliate, Daihatsu has had it rough the past few months. The rigged test results from the all-new Vios and Wigo cast a dark cloud over the DNGA-based (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) vehicles. If that wasn’t enough, the crash test procedures for the Raize were, according to Toyota’s words, improperly certified. By Toyota’s own admission, the test was conducted without the presence of a ‘certification authority’."

What I'd be worried about it safety.
Toyota is NOT trust worthy and here they're also very suspicious about how they conduct it.
They also have not published results - they just said 'it passes'.
And honestly? it's also very light for a car that didn't go to extremes in weight savings...
So that also might have an effect on safety.
manual 3 cylinder NA engine
The Daihatsu "WA" engine is too new to know anything about it.
I guess it will be a decent engine, previous Toyota/Daihatsu engines have been decent - yeah they vibrate, lack in power and torque, but they probably can run quite a bit with FREQUENT service (10,000km at most!)
What are your thoughts about 3 cylinders
Personally, I like some of the new 3 cylinder engines that have power and still last: the K10C 999cc BoosterJet is great even for larger AWD cars, the 1.2L PureTech 135 also is quite good, etc.
A well designed 3 cylinder engine a turbocharger can be decent if it's proven.
Naturally aspirated 3 cylinder engines on the other hand are very bland; For example the K12N DualJet is very reliable and is drivable with its 90 horsepower and 110 NM - it's just constantly feels like your car lacks power.
Daihatsu’s name and reliability in general?
They're good, cars like the old 2010s Sirion, Materia and mainly the Terios are all famous for reliability, practicability and durability.
Thanks for the info man 😄
