Hi!
what do you think about Toyota‘s 1.2 turbo engine on european corolla and auris? Could last long with normal drive? Never heard of any problems and it’s already about 6-7 years old
1.2 turbo engine
Is it bad? no - compared to TSI or Euro-EcoBoost it's great.
Is it great? no - it's very a lackluster design with "euro inspired" longevity and reliability.
Way above average when compared to European engines - but much weaker than non-European Toyota.
Their main and well known issue is terrible oil consumption.
Toyota has modified the engines in 2013 (rings, pistons, valve cover, oil nozzles) and yet for issues still persist.
Toyota then modified it AGAIN in 2014 - similarly with the exact same issues.
There is a known issue with EGR causing carbon deposits causing compression loss.
Toyota has acknowledged the issue and does not offer any realistic solutions (replace pistons, rings and con rods)
Another thing it's famous for is sounding like crap, both the VVT system and the timing chain.
Toyota is offering modified parts that improve the acoustic properties - but they're far from cheap.
And other than these design defects - there are also a lot of quality issues.
These are not like the ZR-series (1.6/1.8/2.0 Non-Hybrid) marketed to the rest of the world that last indefinitely.
Although they are crappy by Toyota standards - they're much better than modern euro designs.
200k -250k km (125k - 150k miles) is doable.
