Thumping noise when close to full stop

Hi All.

I have an 04 Pontiac vibe base w/ a manual transmission with approx 43K miles which I've owned for about 6 months. On a handful of occasions the shifter has gotten hung up briefly when I shifted from 1 to 2 and it felt like it moved upward in my hand just briefly.  And at times the shifter almost seems to move too easily between 1 and 2, as if I'm getting assistance shifting into 2.   Per Scotty's reply regarding the shifter issue, I asked my mechanic if the car could possibly have broken transmission mounts or possible broken motor mounts.  He was adamant that it didn't.

Now I notice that there's a sort of thumping noise as I get near a full stop from a decent speed. It seems like it's coming from the rear though.  Any idea what the thumping noise might be and if it could be related to that other issue mentioned above?

Thanks for any comments.

Well that's for the shifting those have those ridiculous cable shift systems and they just wear I would live with it because those cables cost a small. That's for thumping it can be anything from a loose exhaust rubber hanger to worn struts in the back to any kind of suspension bushing that's worn on the rear control arms
