Why aren't I getting the advertised fuel economy

Hi Scotty,   I bought my 2016 Toyota Corolla S brand new. It has 38,000 miles now. I only get 25 City/Highway Mpg. I took it back to the dealer and they told me they can’t do anything. They said it’s the way you drive and different types of gasoline you use. I’m supposed to get over 30 Mpg. Is there anything you can recommend?  Thank you

A lot of your mileage does depend on how and where you drive. I have an 09 Matrix, same engine/trans, and I have gotten 38 mpg on long trips, 30 mpg in my usual suburban/commuting and less than 20 mpg during the recent pandemic shutdown, when I was only doing short trips.

Did you ever get 30mpg?

The only recommendation I have is stop believing advertisements, along with everything else.
