Hi Scotty, do you have an opinion on Toyota being big brother and collecting your driving data?
Got a lot of companies are probably doing that not telling us I personally don't care I've got nothing to hide.
Beginning in specific model years, all major manufacturers can routinely monitor characteristics of the vehicle usage and operation that many would consider intrusive, and some even consider an invasion of privacy. And it seems that, with every model year, more and more data is made available.
In some cases, and under some conditions, law enforcement agencies and insurance companies can also access such data to prove/disprove vehicle GPS positions at any given date and or time, vehicle fuel and safety systems status, what gear(s) you use, how many times the accelerator and brakes were used, and how hard they were pressed.
Insurance companies can, and do, use such data to adjust rates based upon actual driver use of the vehicle.
I have personally seen such data used in court cases, both criminal and civil.
And my wife routinely uses our home computer to monitor her vehicle fuel level and any condition issues that may have arisen. She can also tell how many hard-braking events I've had on my vehicles. And even when she is at work, she can quickly tell if I am travelling, where I am and where I'm going, and whether or not I'm breaking any speed laws getting there. And by the way, I can tell if she's really at work, or maybe shopping ? (Yes, I can use the vehicles 360 camera system to see what store she's at).
One of the simplest ways to prevent such data from being available is to disable the vehicles GPS and communications systems. However, that may have serious effects on many of the vehicle systems and features.
But yes, there are other steps that can be taken.
To me it's just another reason (aside from being a cheapskate) to stick with older models.
My fear is that they will use this to raise your insurance and tell where you are driving!
@remusrm
often the same people complaining about privacy are the ones using Google maps and stuff to get around.
Google maps does not report ODB car info, or sell it to insurance for a lower rate. What my issue is that fact Toyota is hush about it, activates the sharing automatically without being able to turn it off. To opt out, only allows the sharing part of data with insurance not to take place, but we all know a hack will solve that!
