Hi Scotty
My brother in law had his engine in his 2008 Camry seize. He ran over a some scrap metal on a construction site and it punctured the oil pan. Thing is he continued to drive it for over a month! He was waiting for a replacement pan he ordered at the dealer. I recall you talking about the Japanese being awash in used engines for sale. Do you know how to go about getting one. The dealer wants 8 thousand dollars to install a genuine Toyota refurbished engine. Should he risk a short block since the head and cams were also starved for oil?
An internet search on "used Toyota engines from Japan" will find multiple sources for those used engines.
What engine does he have? Ordinarily I would consider a used low-miles engine from Japan a good solution in a case like that but if he has the oil-burning 2AZ-FE 4-cylinder model a used engine is going to have that defect.
A 14-year-old Camry is not worth sinking $8000 into. In that position I'd either look for another car or get a quote from a good independent shop rather than a stealership.
