- Hi Scotty from "Winter-peg", Manitoba. As a knowledgeable Toyota Mechanic, what are your thoughts on the infamous "Toyota ticking"(Toyota tapping) noise of many Toyota engines idling. I have heard from other Toyota owners say that this is normal and not to worry about it. Some say its injector noise and not the o/h cam tapping on lifters. I think alot of owners would like to hear your view on this issue. PS, I hope you are settling into your new place.toyota

Hello
I hope that you are well. As a Toyota owner of 10+ years, the tapping you hear are the sounds of the lifters if I am not mistaking. If it were the injectors, I feel your gas mileage will suffer and you could also smell a little gas/fumes.
Sometimes a thicker oil may quiet it but since most Toyota lifters are not really serviceable by an average joe, you may have to live with it. I hope this helps 🙂
