Transmission fluid drain and fill

I remember Scotty telling us never to flush the transmission that was not regularly serviced, only to drain and fill. But I feel like there was more specificity. Did he say to only refill it half with new fluid and the other half the old fluid?

realise that your transmission is already beyond expected lifetime.

drain + fill only replaces around half the fluid anyway. Most will stay inside torque converter, cooler lines, etc.

He has said to put back in the same amount of fluid as came out - or, check the level with the dipstick if present. (That is a partial change. You can retain the old fluid in a clean container in the event of problems.) Do a partial change 3 or 4 times, driving around for a whle between changes, and you'll have changed out nearly all the fluid.
