my 2003 mazda tribute was overheating due to a headgasket failure, during the engine removal, the mechanics spilled the transmission oil, we flushed it and put new fluid with OEM specs, and now the transmission is slipping

I guess he owes you a new transmission.
Exactly! Who’s idea was it to flush the transmission?

This is why you never ever flush engines or transmissions.

My guess is the trans overheated with the engine. Im not familiar with Mazda but a lot of vehicles have the trans cooled through the radiator.
It is really a Ford as the Mazda Tribute was a rebadged Ford Escape.
