stalling at idle

Hi...

I hope you can help me.

I have a 1999 Volvo S70 that is giving us all fits. My regular mechanic has completely tuned up this car (3) times now...Using (3) different sets of parts from different companies (I can tell by the color of the colors of the distributor caps & plug wires... ($600) worth of work.)

Every time, when I first get it back, it runs GREAT for (2) days then starts chugging/missing like it's going to fall apart. I have to put it in neutral or constantly brake torque it at every stop light to keep it running...and backing it up makes it just die completely.

I originally had it towed to my regular mechanics because I stopped really hard at a stop sign one night and it died and never would start for me again.

Now, my regular mechanic asked me to have my car looked at by another shop that does imports. They just told me that it's an injector problem on cylinder 5 and it needs replacing...Another $600??  To me this doesn't sound right.

If it's an injector problem...why each time would it run Great for a couple of days...then go back to the same rough idle?

HELP - PLEASE!!

Since you're dealing with a 25-year-old car there could be any number of problems with worn or deteriorated components. (How old is the timing belt on that engine? Hopefully not original!)

Presumably you have misfires, though it would be helpful to know what codes or data issues were found during troubleshooting. If the fuel injector on cylinder #5 is suspect that could be swapped with an injector on another cylinder and see if the misfire travels with the injector. I'd also be looking at basics like filters, spark plugs, fuel pressure. Really that low-hanging fruit should have been checked by your mechanic but there were not much in the way of details about what was done aside from swapping out ignition parts.
