Hi Scotty
I have a 2012 VW Jetta TDI and want to know what happens if you run out of fuel. Will this cause a lot of damage.

I was doing that on my first car years ago. It was petrol one and after several times doing so, I needed to change the fuel pump. I have never done that again.
Before that, a coworker had run out of fuel with Renault Master with 2.8L diesel while delivering stuff. He needed manually pump it to engine via a device attached to system. He needed about half an hour to start the engine.
All that was on older cars. I don't want to think what would happen with computerized ones nowadays.
