I am aware of the worst possible scenario but I have no indications of transmission problems. The car has approximately 130,000 miles with automatic transmission and still averages 24-26 mpg, 30 on the freeway.
I have been getting the code for over a year. Have taken it to local Cadillac dealer (big mistake). They diagnosed bad fuel pump in gas tank ($800). When light came back they gave me song and dance that their best guys didn't diagnose it right and wanted to do it again. I haven't taken it back. I was told about you from a neighbor and decided to see what you suggested.

You probably need a new torque convertor as the PCM is reading a different speed. You could try changing the fluid and filter. When was it last changed?
