A dealer? You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. You must be cautious.
While there are some basics you can check yourself, be sure to have a good mechanic of your own choosing give the thing a thorough inspection BEFORE purchase. If the dealer won't permit this, run away.

Get the Vin number and check the Carfax. It can give you some ideas about how the car was taken care of, but more importantly, you need to have a mechanic check the car before putting down any serious money and be very leary about buying cars from dealerships.
