Where to start looking to buy a used car?

I’m looking into getting a car but I’m so lost on where to begin. I would buy new but wouldn’t mind saving money on a used car. Any advice on where to look for used cars?

If you’re looking at offline locations, start at estate sales or word of mouth from friends/family. If online, and you’re in the States, look up Craigslist.

If buying used, get it checked thoroughly by a professional mechanic, before you buy it.

Good luck!

A Toyota dealership!  Actually somewhat of a joke but Toyotas are historically very reliable.

My favorite is AutoTrader.com.  I wouldn't buy from a lot that only sells sued cars.  The dealerships keep the best trade ins for their lots and let the worst ones go to the auctions.  The used car lots buy their cars from the auctions.

As much as I dislike Facebooks censorship I just recently scooped up a mint 2010 Highlander limited through a private sale posted there.   Just before that gem popped up I had test drove a private sale Rav4 through FB that I was keen on buying. This was my first used car purchase not done through friends/family in my life and I have been leasing new like a fool for the past 12 years.  Prior to discovering the FB marketplace I was searching for many months using Autotrader and the variety of inventory there was solid although it seemed like mostly dealerships, both used and new dealers.  The hunt was fun and fulfilling and the expert people moderating this forum and in generall the info on this forum is exceptional so youre off to a great start.  Good luck.
