Which newer Toyota SUV should I get?

Topic starter

I have a 2009 Ford Escape with ~135k miles, V6 & automatic transmission with brake line problems, fuel pump problems, TPMS problems, & the trunk won’t open. I think it’s worth it to get a better/newer vehicle instead of worrying about this one. I’m thinking of a newer (still used, of course) model of Toyota SUV. Which years/models would you recommend to be most reliable? My main focus is on a RAV4 or a Highlander, but beggars can’t be choosers. I appreciate the help with this!

What is your current budget? Any particular year?

Anything mainly within 5-6 years old, and my wife and I are working through the budget. So far, just window shopping & planning

With very few exceptions, the best years are the last year before they introduce a new version. This is especially the case with Toyota, as they really work at fixing anything they get wrong with the new models/engines/features.  So, 2016, 2012, 2011

You can go to this site to see what items to check on each year model - I've picked 2011, you can check the other years as needed

Do you really need the space (and awful gas mileage) of a Highlander or will a RAV4/CR-V suit your requirements, better?
