Which “stop leak” products do you recommend?

I was in o’Reillys a couple days ago and was astonished at how many products there are for stopping leaks. Cooling System leaks, transmission leaks, engine oil leaks, rear main seals, power steering, head gaskets, and of course the dreaded AC refrigerant with stop leak🤯

I have successfully sealed a head gasket with Bars Head gasket sealer, and they have expanded their products far beyond just your engine cooling system.

I’m sure a lot of this stuff is just pie in the sky, and some of them, such as the air conditioner stop leak, Will ruin expensive components. I would love to start compiling a list of stop leak products that work as advertised.

What stop leak products have you used that actually worked?

I sealed a timing chain cover with Bars Leaks head gasket repair permanntly

Hey Mittegag, in regards to Bars Leaks head gasket sealer, you said you sealed a timing chain cover leak right? Did you ever replace the timing cover gasket to see how it sealed it?

@noble-firebird Mittegag has been permanently banned and won’t be able to reply.

I see that is unfortunate. Then can I ask you DayWalker if the Bars Leaks can seal gaskets other than Head gaskets? Such as the timing cover gasket?

The vast majority of those are just snake oil and don't do anything.

There are a couple, like the Bars Head Gasket Sealer, that work but only as a Band-Aid fix. The best option is to treat the problem, not the symptom. If you have a leaking gasket, replace the gasket and be done with it. That's the best option.

None, for more than a few days.
