Why is my cutlass making a rev sound when igniting?

I searched for this very question and couldn't find it, so here is my problem:

My '94 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra v6 was giving me trouble for a couple of weeks when trying to start it.  I turned the key once and it just sounded like it was revving up.  I turned it again and it started up fine.

After two weeks of this, it now doesn't start at all.  It doesn't turn over AND it doesn't start.  It just makes the revving sound and if I try to start it more than once, smoke comes out of my hood.

I'm not a car savvy person, so I'm sorry if my question is incoherent.

Sounds like the starter is failing. Give it whack with a hammer while someone cranks it with the key.

Ok I'll try that too while I'm waiting for the mechanic. Thanks!

Where is the smoke coming from, exactly? Is it electrical in nature? Is it a belt that's tangled up? Is the starter "smoked?" And so forth.

Have it towed to a good Diagnostic shop, with an older mechanic familiar with OBD1 cars. Don't take it to a shop with mechanics younger than the vehicle.

Good luck.

Good rule of thumb on old cars and young mechanics, geriscan! Particularly, mid-70's to late 90s cars had some very quirky things about them

Looks like it's coming from the engine. There are wires laying over the engine, but it looks like it was built that way in the factory. The belts all seem fine.

I think I'll take your advice and take it to a good mechanic. Thanks!!
