Aloha I have a 07 Odyssey base model, 160k miles Runs great. But interior is not the best and the body has a ton of scratches some dents and the paint peeling.
Then I just got a 07 odyssey exl leather interior, sunroof. Very nice body, nice paint. Very nice interior. But has a engine with a bad head and possible engine damage. But trans is also great. 200k miles
I was so excited to put my engine from my base model into the exl, I called honda, gave them vin numbers and they told me the engines are different.
I am so sad. I was so excited to have such a nicer car by just swapping the engines. And now im being told engines are different even tho they are both 2007s.
I was thinking I could swap the engines. Have a much nicer car. Also a extra trans on the side. And a entire parts car as well.
Im in disbelief and wondering if there's any way to make it work?

Anything is possible if you have enough money.
Those engines have the same displacement, per Google's AI feature, but the EX-L and Touring model uses i-VTEC technology, with more advanced engine management, specifically Variable Cylinder Mangement. This is not available on lesser trim models. With the LX, that engine only features standard VTEC technology.
As a result, wiring harnesses are most likely dissimilar, etc. It would be an absolute rat's nest if you were to change all of that on a near 20-year-old Odyssey.
@justin-shepherd can I just swap the computers and it be fine? What exactly is vcm removable or can it be deleted or disabled to make it work
can I just swap the computers
computers are programmed for the specific vehicle configuration, and your VIN
It would likely be simpler and less expensive to swap the nice interior into your running Odyssey and go to a discount body shop like Maaco to fix your dents and paint. Either that or install a replacement engine in the "new" Odyssey.
Realistically though if you want a nicer car the best way to accomplish that is to just to buy one in good condition that is equipped the way you want. You're messing around with vehicles nearly 20 years old that are not worth putting a lot of time, effort, and money into.
