2009 Yaris squealing on cold start

Hi Scotty!

about a month ago I bought a 2009 Yaris automatic Five door hatchback with 57,000 miles on it. It’s been running great and getting 27 to 32 miles per gallon. About two weeks ago it started squealing on cold start. Then it quits and runs fine. The www is telling me it’s the serpentine belt and it needs to be changed. Is that the same as the timing belt? I was under the impression this had a timing chain and did not need to be changed. The dealer changed the fan belt before I bought it. (I had this verified by my mechanic before I bought the car) is this noise something I need to worry about?

Yes, serpentine belt = timing belt. If the belt is new, tension is perhaps not adjusted enough. Does it have automatic tensioner? Perhaps it is going out. How long do you have this car? Perhaps dealer made crapoy job.

Good luck.

It seems with those, if you pause a the "acc" position on the key for about a second before moving to the start position they don't squeal.

Something to do with the computer/alternator communication.

Try it

The serpentine belt is another name for the drive belt.

Start with checking the drive belt & all the pulleys run by the drive belt.
