I know this is kinda of a silly question. But after just purchasing a used 2017 Honda Accord V6 Touring coupe I'm kinda baffled by the computer oil monitoring system. The oil was changed at purchase time & I've not put about 5k miles on it now. Looked the other day and it says oil life is at 50%. Manual & dealer says change it approx every 7500+miles but personally I think that is to long between changed. On my old Accord v6 I always ran synthetic and changed it 3500-4000miles and the car wasn't even burning oil still with 260,000 miles on it until hitting a deer & Ins totaled it.
That all said should I wait til the 7500mile mark or just go about changing it around 5,000miles or less. I am one to keep cars for a long time & having no problem doing normal stuff more often so it keeps the car in good shape for the long run. Just wondering what you opinion is on how long to go between oil changes
I'd do it at 5K-6K intervals, that's the safe thing to do. However to really know what's going on with the oil you need to periodically send a sample out to a lab for analysis. Cheaper to just change it on a shorter schedule.
1 year/5k miles on full synthetic. Whichever comes first.
Thanks for the replies & input. Think I'll go with the 5k mark for the long haul then as I plan to keep it.
Stick to 5,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. I never listen to those oil service monitors.
It’s crazy. I don’t understand how a car can go the recommended interval of 10K. To me that is insane. TBH, I really don’t know if we have progressed to that point. I still take the safe route and do oil changes at every 5K at the most.
I agree with everyone else. I do 5k mile oil changes on all my vehicles. The bigger numbers mentioned by manufacturers are just examples of planned obsolescence in my opinion. The longer you let oil sit in your car, the more likely you will have engine issues that require you to pay them to fix. Money in the bank for them.
Keeping clean oil is essential, I used to be the 5k-7k mi OCI. I went back to 3k mi. Even using synthetic, especially in these GDI motors I’m seeing sludge buildup early on.
