You're advice on a Heavy Duty Pickup

Hey Scotty,

I'm in the market for a newer, used Heavy Duty dually diesel pick-up. After hearing about all the issues with the Ford Powerstrokes, their crappy 10 speed transmissions, and now the recall on the axle tubes collapsing, amongst a host of other things, I've ruled them out completely.

My current choices are now a 2019 Silverado 3500. It has the proven? Duramax diesel and my favourite part, the Allison Transmission. I am also looking at a 2019 Ram 3500 with the High Output Cummins and the Toyota built Aisin Transmission. I'll be pulling in excess of 25,000 lbs in the mountains of Alberta and B.C. Which one of these Heavy Duty configurations would you recommend, keeping in mind fuel economy plays an important role. Also, if the Ford Super Duty is a better choice, please let me know that as well!

Well my uncle owned 2 RAM Cummins diesel pickups and he had zero issues with them. I would go with that. Ford won't be improving the 10-speed transmission anytime soon.

My neighbor has a Ram 3500 with Cummins and Allison  The engine and trans are fine but the rest of the truck is falling apart around him.  Lots of electrical problems, cheap interior parts breaking, etc.

That was always my thing about the newer Ram Heavy Duties: might have excellent powertrain but everything else around it seems to fall apart.

People who have bought Rams throughout the yrs know this going in. They do not buy the truck because it’s a Ram. They buy the Cummins, they replace part with better as the wear and the truck goes 500k mi or more. I would never buy a decked out Ram or any truck ever. Less is more.

Cummins, Ford, never GM. People that rely on trucks for their living aren’t buying GM anymore, with the exception of the die hards. More and more Rams and Fords are filling those spots. You buy the lowest trim packages to avoid the unnecessaries and move on.

I would go with the GM.
