| What to take in an emergency? | 18Relevance | 2 years ago | jxyooj71 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| 2020 Toyota Camry 68k miles. Hi, wondering what do you take as far as car maintenance stuff when you might have to evacuate? I'm by the fires in CA for context. So far I got: 2ton Pittsburgh low profile jack, 2x Daytona 3 ton jack stands, 5qt 0w-16 full synthetic oil, 1x oil filter, tire inflator. Looking to cover bases and pack less/lighter, but not where I compromise durability/quality. Kinda debating on the off-road Badlands 3ton jack cuz smaller for instance. Thanks in advance! | |||||

| You can use the jack that came with the vehicle. Spend the $9. It's a lot cheaper than paying a mechanic $200 | |||||
| H-pattern shifted to the left | 18Relevance | 4 years ago | manmathew | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| The car is a 2016 Subaru forester premium, 6 speed manual with 106,000 miles. The clutch was replaced about 1k miles ago, and immediately after getting it back 2 problems were noticed: The H-pattern shifted to the left (5th is now in the middle), and reverse no longer requires the pull-up to access. Is this something I can fix myself (and how) or do I need to bring the car back? I have a jack and jack stands, no transmission jack. | |||||

| my jack doesn't have wheels either. Didn't the vehicle come with a scissor jack? An inexpensive bottle jack costs $20. Ramps are also under $100. | |||||

| I have another jack I can use to raise the lower control arm if needed. I'll do it again tomorrow. I'll go higher and have my other jack standing by to assist. I had a similar situation with my '01 Cadillac deVille. I had to jack the car so high it appeard that it may topple over. It also is in need of suspension component replacements. | |||||
| New Fuel Pump won't start | 18Relevance | 3 years ago | Newlife2023 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| 96 dodge caravan 130k miles 3.8 V6 Replaced friends fuel pump still no start She said one day she used gas that had been left open in rain and shortly after would not start She bought new fuel pump and I spent hours replacing it. I thought maybe I got fuel line tips mixed up when reconnecting but saw a video online of someone doing this job, and saw clearly the correct order to connect to. So I'm sure that's fine. But ya won't start. It tries too. But doesn't. It does crank and you hear engine trying to fully start but won't..... Tried replacing relay and still nothing. Don't hear fuel pump coming on with ear to gas cap but went under car and clearly heard it buzz on. Un sure what issue is. I mean putting the fuel pump in. Is it really that easy to brake something. Never replaced a fuel pump on the tank before only on sedans in back seat. I did lower tank by a few inches by unbolting one side two bolts. Idk if that caused an issue Before I replaced it I left a jack under the car on the gas tank and put van down and looked underneath and it was severely pushing inwards on the tank. I quickly jacked it back up and removed jack. And after a few seconds it popped itself back into place. Inspected it saw no cracks or damage to gas tank. I guess the material is that flexible. Saw no leaks. So basically it put a huge dent on bottom of tank, and after I jacked back up and removed jack on tank, it popped itself out after few seconds with no visible damage anywhere after inspecting. Under half a tank of gas is in car. I don't think that caused any damage let me know what you think tho. Car way running fine before she put this gas in it that was left in rain, could of even been the wrong kind gas. **What if I got the fuel line tips mixed up, you know the two tips that plug on top of fuel pump. If I did, will that brake the pump. And if I switch them real quick, and it wasn't issue in first place, will it cause damage first try?** | |||||

| so before you continue... just a friendly reminder to be careful. Making sure your parking brake is set, and wheels are chocked. Use jack-stands. Never get under a vehicle that is only being held up by a jack. I've seen someone get crushed by a car that shifted onto them. Being crippled isn't much fun. Try to work on one side at a time. If you need the whole front raised up, then first raise one side and secure it on a stand. Then move over to the other side and door the same. If you need more height out of your jack, then use blocks of sturdy wood. But be careful as this adds an element of instability that could shift. | |||||
| RE: Upper Ball Joints | 18Relevance | 4 years ago | Justin Shepherd | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Both ended up needing replaced. Oddly the wheels both showed play at the 9-3 position, not 12-6, and no longer have play with the new ball joints. The passenger side rusted into the knuckle and I bent a 24" pry bar trying to get it out! I couldn't pry it out so I got creative. I put the truck's spare tire bottle jack on the lower control arm, close to the hinge, it's a closed piece of metal around there, so I knew I wouldn't bend anything. I extended the jack until the upper control arm seated in the jack, then slowly extended the it until the stud popped out. It startled me, cuz it made a loud pop, haha. | |||||
| Thoughts on plastic car ramps for DIY repair? | 18Relevance | 5 years ago | alban123 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hello Everyone. A close relative of mine just bought a pair of plastic/resin car ramps from Walmart for about $40 and they are rated at about 6,000 Lb.'s. I'm a person who has always used a good old jack and jack stands, but I know that these ramps are generally considered to be more practical and potentially even safer than jack stands. Would love to know your thoughts on these or any positive or negative experiences. Thank you. | |||||

| You can independently verify the dealer mechanic's claims in 15 minutes if you have a jack, some jack stands and a rubber mallet lying around. jack up the car, stick stands under it, then slide underneath and tap on the converters with the mallet. If they rattle, they're breaking down inside and will need replacing at some point if you live in an e-check area. | |||||

| So I watch scotty video on how to preserve car for long periods of time I forgot to do two most important thing Oil stabilizer and car jack So I need your recommendation should I do this or not So I was thinking of taking all three of my card in dino and driving them at speed of 40 to 50 for 5 to 10mins after adding fuel stabilizer Also tires will get bad and I don't wanna get any chances. So I asked my friend if I can borrow his jack from dealer. So I was gonna put all three of my cars on jack and take wheels off until I come back Also I changed battery on both si and spder because they have more mileage as compared to type r which has only 4500.... should I change battery on that one to..I don't wanna waste to much money jack he said he is gonna give those for free as a favor from past | |||||

| Honestly. There are many steps to ensuring the car is stable before crawling under. But ensure the car does not shift/roll. I always use more than the recommended jack stands, at least 4 to 8 if it half or all the way off the ground, I'll also lift the jack again so it's touching the lift point once the vehicle is rested on the stands. So basically at the least, my vehicle is always supported by 2 stands with 2 more stands tightly positioned as well as the jack supporting as another fail safe. It's not meant for this kind of work, but RV jacks that ascend via threads were perfect for this kind of work. | |||||

| Think you may have misread. recommending using jack STANDS like Scotty encourages, not just a jack. Do I understand you to say that you would use tires as jack stands. I think that my head and chest are bigger than the width of the wheel. | |||||

| Quite possibly given the car's age. (In fact I'd be surprised if the motor mounts weren't bad.) A photo would be helpful to see what's going on. Check the mounts, maybe carefully jack the engine up a little with a floor jack to get the clearance needed. | |||||
| Corolla 2012 airbag light issue | 18Relevance | 5 years ago | skilton | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hi Scotty, I'm writing you from Romania and I'm watching all your videos every night (as the time you're uploading the videos, is already night in Romania :))) I have a 2012 Toyota Corolla, 1.6 vvti gasoline, standard transmission and brought this last year from Toyota dealership for a really good price, about 5500USD. The car was 233000 km, now is 241000 km and works perfectly. However, I have one minor issue that is driving me crazy: sometimes, the passenger airbag light is displayed. I took it to a mechanic and he erased the error, but guess what, it came again. I made some research and found this is related to the plastic yellow jack located under passenger seat. Used a cable tie to tight the jack and worked perfectly for months, but now from time to time the light is displayed again. Any idea about this, is there any solution that may fix this permanently? I'm thinking that an imperfect contact might trigger the error. I saw this is not happening at all when the passenger seatbelt is on. Can I use some WD40 or contact cleaner to spray inside the jack? Regards | |||||
