Vehicle Recalls
Vehicle safety and recalls are under jurisdiction of the federal government.
- USA: Department of Transportation (DoT) - National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
- Canada: Transport Canada
- Australia: Department of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development and Communications
Note: Australia is in the middle of implementing the new Road Vehicle Standards Act (RVSA). It comes into full effect Jul, 2021
Manufacturers are required to fix these safety issues at their expense. Act quickly, as some recalls must be reported within a certain time.
It is a good idea to register your vehicle ownership with the manufacturer. Most now allow you to do this online. This enables them to send you a letter if they suspect your vehicle has a serious problem. Neglecting to address an issue under recall could result in serious injury or death.
How do I know if my car is included in a recall?
- Check online
- Find your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

- Enter your VIN in the search database
- USA: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls
- Canada: https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/7/VRDB-BDRV/search-recherche/menu.aspx
- Australia (before 2021-07): https://www.productsafety.gov.au/products/transport/cars
(after) https://www.productsafety.gov.au/news/a-new-home-for-road-vehicle-recalls - The tool will list outstanding recalls affecting your vehicle within 15 years.
- Each vehicle manufacturer also has their own database. Visit their website for details.
Example:
- You can also call your manufacturer's toll-free customer service line. They will also tell you if the recall has been taken care of by a previous owner.
What do I do if my vehicle is being recalled?
- Call your local dealership and they will schedule an appointment to bring your vehicle in for service.
- If you're not sure where to go, or have further questions, you can also call the manufacturer national customer service.
Gotta say, I really like these new informative posts!
