02 Sentra vs. 02 Maxima

- 2002 Nissan Sentra with 77k miles, automatic transmission, 4 cylinder (1.8L) - ($1900 at a car dealer)

- 2002 Nissan Maxima with 102k miles, automatic transmission, V6 (3.5L) - ($1500 private owner)

any thoughts on these cars? (the pros/cons)

what would be a better deal? I know the Sentra will last longer but I'm looking for something I can keep for 1-2 years and be satisfied with. I heard the Maxima was a fast and fun car, but I don't know if it'll break down and all that

thanks

Age is the biggest con for me.  But I think I understand the $ for the time being.  With that said, I might consider the 77k one with inline 4.  It will be less repair cost over the next couple years (everything else being equal).  And offer less.

I would prefer an older toyo with a 4cyl and manual being more reliable (usually) as I also assume you want the least issues and repair costs over the next couple years.

"everything else being equal" is the issue here with old cars... just pretty impossible to tell history (without spend a decent chunk of money (in relation to car value).

If you want an A to B car, get the Sentra the 1.8's are pretty reliable. I had a 1994 Maxima and it was horrible transmission and engine fell apart but that was the older generation the 1998-2003 era is the best. Bring both to a mechanic chances are one is in better mechanical condition then the other so get whichever one is in better shape. If you live in like LA, forget about the Maxima because it is huge. But if you are like in the suburbs then go ahead they are excellent.
