He says vehicle is in great mechanical shape. I've heard the transmissions aren't great, and I could be looking to replace or rebuild in the future. I've offered $2500. but still wanting to go down some more on it. Looking to drive 1-2 years before getting something else.
Clarification: How much mileage would you put on within those 1-2 years? (Guess-estimate)
I'd say 15,000-20,000
The 3.8 is a really good engine, but as you say transmission is a weak spot. Check condition of fluid, make sure it's not burnt or gritty. Also pay attention to any bad noises, and any apparent looseness in suspension or steering and that the car tracks straight on the road. Check underneath for rust. Really a mechanic should check it out and aside from physically checking the car over you'd want it scanned for codes and live data.
There's not much available in that price range so if it checks out it could be OK for a couple of years.
Thanks, will do. Living in small town, barely any vehicles worth driving in the price range. Drivable ones are in the 3000 range and up. I'm gonna looking for a reputable mechanic in my area and see if he can come to inspect. I bought a scan tool, but nothing as powerful as an more expensive one. If I can't, I'll make a list of everything to be looking for and inspect to my best ability
