Scotty, I'm looking at an 04 Matrix front wheel drive 1.8, 5 speed 162k miles. Its in decent condition, missing a few interior trim parts, scanned it with my Think Car, no codes, power windows all work, AC blows ice cold, heater works well, all fluids looked good, has a newer radiator, Maryland Eastern Shore car so no rust underneath. Drives well except I had to really press the clutch hard to start. The clutch worked well shifting, but I am worried the synchros are going. When I shift up from 2nd to 3rd, I get a slight grind and in fourth it jumps out of gear to neutral. It could be old gear oil.
The plate on the interior around the shifter is gone so I think they may have thought it was a linkage maybe. The seller said he doesn't drive stick well, got it for his daughter that doesn't like it, and he has had it a few months and nothing else
Everything else was fine. He was asking 1800 but was already saying he'd take 1400. I was thinking 1000 because of possible transmission problems which will be expensive. Do you think its worth a try and do you think its the synchros? The 4th gear popped out 3 times in a 5 mile ride.
Take it to a good mechanic & have them go over the problem. Don’t buy any car on an assumption. Get a reputed mechanic to look over the car before you buy it.
