I have a 2005 Auto Toyota matrix XR with 200,700 miLes. It makes a roaring sound when I drive it that doesn't go away at any speed. It sounds kind of like having snow tires on the front. I rotated the tires but the noise didn't change. It's not a wheel bearing because it's not metal on metal grinding. Any assistance is appreciated. I've driven several Corollas in my life and I know that they don't make this noise natively. {black}:idontknow: Thank you!
Can you guys hear anything odd on the vid?
Replaced the $250 hub and it's fine now. Thank you so much everyone!
I saw the video & heard the noise. I call wheel bearing on this one.
There doesn’t need to be 360deg play in the wheel or metal on metal grinding.
I’ve had 3 wheel bearings go out on different corners which sounded exactly like your noise. Started roaring at around 20mph & kept getting louder as the speed increased. None of them had any play in the wheel or grinding noises, just roaring.
Use this trick - Jack up each wheel and spin it vigorously with one hand, while your other hand holds onto the strut. If you can feel the strut vibrating, it’s the wheel bearing at that corner.
Keep us updated with your diagnosis.
I wouldn't rule out the bearings
There's absolutely no play in the bearings and when you make turns there's no more noise in the bearing at all
Have you checked the brakes?
Brakes are all excellent
Can anyone see or play the vid I uploaded?
i have a roar in an '05 Corolla, fella said it has been doing it for 50k miles, going to have the mechanic check the wheel bearings Thursday
could it be the muffler?
If it roars while you rev it up at a standstill, then yeah, it could be a leaking exhaust like the purple minion Corolla in Scotty’s video. If it roars on the move, it’s usually a wheel bearing.
my roar was a wheel bearing, now repaired
Thanks for letting us know!
Took it to Brakes Pluss to have them dx and they said the front RT bearing's shot so will be working on that first. They also said the front LFT might be shot as well.....
@mark88 Cheap fix?
Ok! I can try that, too. I saw that diagnostic one time and when I had it up on the hoist I forgot to do that one.
Let us know the results.. good luck!
RESULT: Replaced the bearing and have been driving it awhile. It definitely was the wheelbearing. Thank you guys. Mark
