05 Toy Matrix acceleration issues

Topic starter

Hi everyone,

My Matrix seems to have some odd acceleration issues.  Seems like it jumps up in speed at abt 30 mph a bit.  Then sometimes it seems hard to accelerate a little.  It's also been somewhat hard to start in the last year

Any assistance is appreciated.

Thank you,

Mark

how long do injectors last?

There is no set time or mileage. I have a 1986 vehicle with 300,000 miles, original injectors, and no injector problems. Ditto for my daily driver which hails from 1997 with over 370,000 miles. (By "no problems" I mean nothing noticeable. There has to be some wear but it is not noticeably affecting vehicle operation or performance.)

Still like any other part they can fail at any time, and they can be subject to clogs and leaks.

@chucktobias where is the big eyed emoticon because wow! 300 Grand huh?!

@chucktobias Hi Chuck Hope you had a good weekend. So I've been looking at injectors online and eBay. EBay has some really inexpensive ones I think and then advance has four for $200. Is that about the best I will get?

@chucktobias here's the ones off of eBay. There are 124 instead of 200

Fuel Injector 12 Holes 4Pcs | 1.8L L4 Gas DOHC | for 2000-2005 Toyota Celica MR2 Spyder 2000-2004 Corolla 03-06 Matrix, 00-02 Chevy Prizm, 03-06 Pontiac Vibe | Replace# 23250-0D040, 23250-22040 https://a.co/d/98aEeOs

@mark88 Don't buy critical parts from eBay, or even Amazon, they are hotbeds of Chinese counterfeits. The best injectors will be OEM or at least from the OEM supplier.

@chucktobias ok .... understood. I also don't want to spend $300 on these. Im looking an Advance Auto now. Also, just to be certain, there's no chance anything else could be causing this odd acceleration right?
I notice that when it's colder out, the car runs better, more "normal". That's prob due to a richer fuel situation I am thinking. Get's into the 90's and 100, and it's hard to even accelerate the car.

@mark88 You could look for an online seller that gives discounts on OEM Toyota parts. If you can find who supplied the injectors to Toyota you could buy that brand with some confidence. (I'd think Denso for a Japanese car but I don't know for certain.)

There are many things that can cause acceleration problems. Probably the best way to diagnose it would be to analyze a recording of the data stream made from the car's computer when the problem occurs. (We don't generally favor the parts cannon approach here.)

@chucktobias how do I get that data?

@chucktobias With a scan tool that has recording capability of course.

@chucktobias are you talking about the garages that have that $10,000 snap-on scanner?

@mark88 My $50 scan tool can do that.

@chucktobias I have one of those. I'll check that out, thank you

Check all the basics first. Air filter, spark plugs etc.  Scan it for codes and check the live data, particularly the fuel trims. The Troubleshooting section offers great advice.

Is this the same ask as the earlier gas mileage question or different?

@hixster this is a different question. The matrix has new plugs new air filter no codes. Thanks for the help appreciate it

@hixster the vehicle does go through times when it will stall out when it idles but that doesn't happen all that often. It does seem like the idles a bit rough and it's hard to start during the day several times but not every time. I did clean off the MAF

@mark88 I don't see this question as being different from your concerns in your previous post > https://carkiller.com/scottykilmer/qa/05-matrix-hard-start-and-poor-gas-mileage/#post-315082 What were your fuel trim values at various RPMs? Replacing plugs and filter was a good start. If your transmission is slipping it will mimic the symptoms you've described as far as drivabiility. This often helps, : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWCKvU2FmDc

@hixster that's interesting. So the little power boost that I get there at about 25 to 30 mph is the transmission?

@mark88 You don't get a boost from a slipping transmission. It's more like your RPMs go up, but your speed doesn't. Since you're also having hard starts, your fuel injectors could dirty or worn. Have you done anything other than install new plugs and an air filter and did you check the transmission fluid to see if it was low?

@hixster the only other thing I've done is brakes and new battery. I have not looked at the injectors

@hixster how long do injectors last? This car has 230,000 miles on it

@mark88 I can't help you.

@hixster this question is open to all techs

Like @chucktobias says, there is no set mileage where you should be replacing fuel injectors. I have a 1999 Ranger with almost 300k miles on it and it's still on the original fuel injectors. Look for clues in your live data. Long-term fuel trim and short-term fuel trim should be fairly consistent. Rich is indicated by a negative percentage, lean is indicated by a positive percentage.

Have you tried running fuel injector cleaner through the engine? Here's a link to Scotty's favorite fuel cleaner: https://www.amazon.com/ATS-Chemical-System-Treatment-ounces/dp/B0CY8ZQ1X4/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?adgrpid=160544369415&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.KUuO_nIbVR3NGGndy_26vMyYloxh4W3UXrH_K80DD_1YGteHwGHnpbbOYIsA7SkxUoThRdmWC3HJZ2t-3hidKG35zsjJQc9QR6qCZxBhWjn5zcGSALrMTtKtli_IwoJTvrTWNWPpHPmjvwK_3L-tigimxDFFN1_3PkNLlD9tr8E_dSNowH9kpnrMKIh0UXBefU7yfeV_hyqv6RPrLlCDPw.P2tBFArsR2m2EPc5xvo-GgLpseVyIZqA6VNTMfFpGyI&dib_tag=se&gad_source=1&hvadid=694523260699&hvdev=m&hvexpln=68&hvlocphy=9015630&hvnetw=g&hvocijid=10870260483016587507--&hvqmt=e&hvrand=10870260483016587507&hvtargid=kwd-2298533471743&hydadcr=24480_13627462&keywords=bernies+ats+fuel+cleaner&qid=1723780037&sr=8-1

@justin-shepherd why is your link so long? This is what I have bookmarked: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CY8ZQ1X4/

I'm using my cell phone.

Thanks Justine!
