Hi. My wife has a 07 dodge nitro and we have a gascap code that keeps appearing, we have gone to autozone, O'Reilly and advanced auto and bought 5 gascaps. Brought it to my mechanic and he clears the code and it comes back. We also have a small evap code we have to fix but the gas cap code is annoying because we have replaced it 5x. Any suggestions?
You need to find out where the small leak is. You should find a mechanic that uses his smoke machine to find the leak.
Obviously, it's NOT the gas cap. It's a problem in the EVAP system. What are the exact codes?
Next, check the vent control valve - is it stuck, is there a short in it's electrical connection? If not, you might need to replace it. Refer to the following:
