[Solved] 08 Taurus x- opening door with dead battery

So the lights got left on with my daughter's Taurus x.  Totally dead battery.

It uses the power locks to unlock the door when the key is inserted, so she can't open the doors... Or the hood, for that matter.

Any ideas?

So her boyfriend was able to get it open, somehow.

Not sure if he turned the key slightly different, actuating a manual cylinder somehow?  Or if it miraculously had  enough juice to operate the power lock?

I may have unfairly accused the 'ol blue oval of a design flaw which might not exist?

Thanks again guys!

I can't believe what a dumb design that is.

Anyway, one option is to jack up the car and find the starter underneath. It's a cylinder shaped object mounted to the engine where it meets the transmission, and a thick cable going to it. That cable is connected to battery positive. Get your booster cables and connect positive to that starter stud and the negative to any bare metal on the engine, frame or body. Now connect the other end of your cables to a power source. You shouldn't need too much to operate the locks, but it should be between 11 and 15 volts, and provide a few amps of current.  A medium size battery charger should do the trick. Or a power tool battery.

Option 2 is to slim jim the door open.

For sure. What was the old slogan? Ford's got a better idea?

Thanks for the thought. She's 3 hours away, so she might need a towing company to do that.

Is there a key-operated lock on the passenger door?

No, unfortunately.

No, unfortunately.

Truly an idiotic design. (I remember those old "Another Better Idea From Ford" commercials as well.)

Try this and see if it helps:

Maybe not. I did a quick web search and other people ran into the same obstacle.
