I have a 4 year old set of Hakkapeliitta snow tires with about 40% the of tread left on them on one set of rims, and bought a set of cheap Walmart Goodyear Reliant tires to replace the summer tires on the other set of rims.

Am I better off using the older tires specifically designed for winter, or new all season?

Snow tires 8 years old actually…time flies.

I am also in Upstate New york, in the Catskills, and I would Keep those Hakkas for sure. They are arguably the best winter tire you can buy, that is the reason I have a set as well. They may lose some winter grip, but at 40% should still do well.

Just don't use those until temps are pretty steady freezing, or they will wear out much quicker.

Age is also a factor, after about 6 years they can get risky.

for winter conditions (ice , snow, freezing temps) I would definitely use the winter tires.
